There are 2 different types of refunds.
-
The first type is the one that affects the base tax due (not the calculated levy). The TYPE is blank. This is the tax information found on page 2. An example would be that a taxpayer has paid their taxes in full and then later the appraisal district grants a homestead, over 65, etc. which lowers the levy and triggers a refund due back to the taxpayer. For this refund, you would select the line item that has the blank for the TYPE. See "How To... Add and Adjustment" to finish entering the refund.
-
The other type of refund will be the refunds that affect the other types (these are found on page 3 of the tax record). Select the line item with the TYPE code that you are wanting to refund. See "How To... Add and Adjustment" to finish entering the refund.
NOTE: If penalty, interest, attorney fees, or discount amounts are to be refunded, these amounts are included in the total for ADJUST AMOUNT. If a discount amount is involved, the ADJUST AMOUNT will not be the amount of the refund check but will be the amount of the refund plus the discount amount.
EXAMPLE 1: A taxpayer pays $107.00 on their taxes in February ($100.00 on base tax, 6.00 on penalty, and $1.00 on interest). The appraisal district then grants an over65 which zeroes out the levy. At this point the Account will show a tax due of $100.00- and a penalty and interest paid of $7.00. To enter the adjustment, you would enter 107.00 for the adjust amount, 100.00 for the tax, 6.00 for the penalty, and 1.00 for the interest.
EXAMPLE 2: A taxpayer pays $97.00 on their taxes in October ($100.00 base tax with a $3.00 discount. When paid, the Tax Paid will show $97.00 and the Discount Paid will show $3.00). The appraisal district then grants an over65 which zeroes out the levy. At this point the Account will show a tax due of $100.00-. To enter the adjustment, you would enter 100.00 for the adjust amount, 97.00 for the tax and 3.00 for the discount amount. The amount of the refund check is $97.00 but you enter $100.00 for the Adjust Amount.
